Why do they teach us as kids to do this? Then we go off and touch each other and everything else. Why not teach everyone to sneeze onto our sleeve or shirt-tail? Help me with this, seriously.

This is completely a cultural thing. A better place to sneeze would be the fist. If you are paranoid about spreading your germs, the absolute best place would be the crook of your elbow.
Basically they teach kids to sneeze into something, just not straight into the air.
