Neurological uses for Ginger root?
I've had these seizure like episodes since I was 12 and no doctor has found anything medically wrong with me nor have they been able to stop them. It's possibly caused by stress, my roomates neurologist recomended that I try ginger root. Any experiences?

If you are looking for scientific evidence for the benefits of ginger, then there is not much available yet! Several recent, but preliminary scientific studies have shown evidence that ginger contains molecular compounds with different medicinal effects. These results may happen when tested alone or in combination with other chemicals. How they work may involve multiple mechanisms, but there seems to be an ability for these chemicals to reduce inflammation, reduce rapidly growing tumor cells, and even help antibiotics get inside bacteria!
I am only aware of one published study from India about ginger and seizures, and it only involved animals. It seems that one or more compounds present in ginger not only seemed to reduce seizures (anticonvulsant effect), but might also reduce anxiety (anxiolytic effect) and nausea (anti-emetic effect).
Before you run out and invest in a ginger company, or stock your shelves with jars of pureed ginger, please realize that the available evidence only occurs in a laboratory setting, like in test tubes. There is no way to be sure that these same effects happen inside a living human body. It is very difficult to assume how much benefit there could be, or whether there remains any benefit after interacting with other chemicals present in ginger, other chemicals in the body, or other medicines one might take.
That being said, wouldn't it be really nice if your seizures were controlled better with a ginger supplement or a little extra ginger flavor to your meal? It certainly would be worth a try if you like the taste and you are not taking the blood thinner Coumadin (warfarin).
If you do decide to try some ginger, then I would strongly recommend keeping a log of your seizures and when you consume ginger in any form to see if there seems to be any relationship.

No! But I am more concerned whether you are under a doctor's treatment or not. Are you? I had epilepsy from the age of 9 and have been seizure free for over 30 years. How old are you?Source(s):

Who knows - it couldn't hurt and it might help so give it a shot. Use candied ginger root.I've had the same problem caused by excessive stress, and my doctors recommended several stress relief courses and excercises. He said if it got any worse, I might have to take chemical-type medicine to balance my neurotransmitters.
Ginger root and ginseng are herbs that are used to relieve stress, I haven't heard of this curing seizure-like episodes, but they will help with stress.

Ginger is a most prominent herb in ayurvedic remedies for Vatic problems to which seizures (epilepsy) belongs. BUt ginger is never taken alone. It is always combined with other herbs like Kapikachu (Mucuna Pruriens), Aswagandha, Vacha (acorus calamus), Shatawari, Brahmi, Shankhavali (Shankhpushpi), Jatamansi etc. All these herbs come under the general name 'Medhya' herbs meaning those which tone the neurons, are used in neurological problems Main purpose of Ginger is to correct blood circulation to brain and also improve appetite, metabolism.Source(s):

I have read in a book on tribal medicine that Ginger powder in buttermilk ( sourtaste) helps reduction/ cure of seizures. But not Ginger root as such. But it is not clinically proven. In 150 mls of dilute buttermilk add about 1 gram( pinch)of fine Ginger Powder, little salt and mix well .Three times a day.No Guarantee of cure.Consult doctor whether it is safe for you.
